What Excuse Is Holding You Back Today?
Mar 11, 2026Some mornings you wake up ready to attack the day.
Other mornings?
Not so much.
If we’re honest, there are days when we simply don’t want to do the things we know we should do. We don’t want to get the workout in. We don’t want to handle the responsibility in front of us. We don’t want to deal with the difficult conversation or the hard task waiting for us.
Excuses start whispering.
You’re tired.
You deserve a break.
You can do it tomorrow.
And if we’re not careful, those excuses become the very thing that keeps us from stepping into the life we were meant to live.
The Battle Between Excuses and Action
Here’s the truth: every single day we have a choice to make.
Will we allow excuses to hold us back?
Or will we break through them?
Now, I’m not saying I win that battle every day. I’m human just like everyone else. There are days when excuses get the better of me.
But I’ve also learned something powerful.
When I look back on the days where I chose action over excuses, I’m always grateful.
I’ve never finished a workout and wished I hadn’t done it.
I’ve never taken responsibility for something important and regretted stepping up.
On the other side of excuses is always something better.
Sometimes it’s freedom.
Sometimes it’s growth.
Sometimes it’s another challenge.
But either way, it moves us forward.
What’s On the Other Side of Your Excuses?
The hard part is that we often don’t know what’s on the other side.
Maybe it’s breakthrough.
Maybe it’s discipline.
Maybe it’s the next level God is preparing you for.
But we never discover it if we stay stuck in excuses.
When we surrender ourselves to a plan that’s bigger than us—God’s plan—and step forward anyway, something begins to shift.
Momentum builds.
Confidence grows.
Freedom starts to show up.
The Morning Habit That Changes Everything
One of the most powerful habits I’ve built into my life is something simple, but incredibly impactful.
Before my feet hit the floor in the morning, I ingest Scripture.
Sometimes it’s while I’m still in bed.
Sometimes it’s while I’m making my morning coffee.
But the first thing I want entering my mind is not the world.
Not social media.
Not news.
Not emails.
Truth.
Not world truth.
Biblical truth.
Because whatever fills your mind first will shape the direction of your day.
Renew Your Mind Before the Day Begins
Scripture teaches us that transformation begins in the mind.
Renewing Your Mind
“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.”
— Romans 12:2 (NLT)
When the first thoughts of your day are grounded in truth, something powerful happens:
Your perspective shifts.
Your excuses lose power.
Your purpose becomes clearer.
Instead of reacting to the day, you begin leading the day.
A Simple Challenge for Tomorrow Morning
- Open your Bible or a Bible app.
- Read a passage of Scripture.
- Sit with it for a moment.
- Let that truth shape your thinking before anything else enters your mind.
You might be surprised how much easier it becomes to push past excuses when your mind is anchored in truth.
Freedom Is On The Other Side
Every day presents a small but powerful choice.
Excuses.
Or action.
Comfort.
Or growth.
When we step past the excuses in front of us and submit ourselves to something bigger than ourselves—God’s plan—we begin to experience something incredible.
Freedom.
And that freedom is always waiting on the other side of the excuse.
Reflection Questions
- What excuse tends to hold you back the most right now?
- What might be waiting for you on the other side of that excuse?
- What would change if you started every morning with Scripture before anything else?
